TIJUANA, Mexico -- Police in Mexico's Baja California state are searching for a U.S. man suspected in the kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl who was taken from her bedroom in Los Angeles, an official said Saturday.
There is strong evidence that Tobias Dustin Summers, 30, could be hiding in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The official said Tijuana police received a report that Summers was spotted in the border city's red light district.
Police searched the area but didn't find him, he said.
All local and state police officers are on alert and are carrying a flyer with the man's picture, the official added.
The girl was abducted from her home last week and found about 12 hours later, barefoot and with bruises and scratches.
U.S. investigators say they believe the girl was driven around in a couple of cars and taken to at least two locations, including a storage facility, before she was released.
Police noted Summers had a criminal history dating back to 2002 and had been arrested for robbery, grand theft auto, possession of explosives and kidnapping.
Authorities haven't given a motive for the girl's kidnapping. They don't believe Summers and her family knew one another.
