New Broadway Sacramento series marked by regional premieres

Broadway Sacramento has announced its 2013-14 season with a six-show package that includes five regional premieres.

The lone returning show, "Wicked," which played a sold-out, four-week run last May, will run three weeks this time starting in May 2014.

All of the other shows will have one-week runs.

The 2013-14 schedule includes "Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical" (Nov. 5-10); "Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story" (Dec. 27-Jan. 2, 2014); "Flashdance – The Musical" (Feb. 4-9, 2014); "Blue Man Group" (March 11-16, 2014); "Sister Act" (April 8-13, 2014); and "Wicked" (May 28-June 15, 2014).

Richard Lewis, who oversees booking the Broadway Sacramento season as president and chief executive officer of California Musical Theatre, said the series is financially healthy again after several recession- induced down years. This past season, the company started hosting one-week runs instead of the more costly two-week runs.

"The one-week season seems to be working very, very well for us," Lewis said.

Lewis said "The Buddy Holly Story" is a piece he's wanted to bring to Sacramento for several years.

"It (previously) didn't work out logistically, but we've always kept our eye on it," Lewis said.

The overwhelming success of 2012's "Million Dollar Quartet" (about Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis) only intensified Lewis' interest in the biographical jukebox musical charting Holly's career.

The seminal rock 'n' roll songs include "Peggy Sue," "Oh Boy," "That'll Be the Day," "Well All Right" and "Not Fade Away," performed by the actors who are also in the live onstage band.

"I've seen it before," Lewis said. "It's a terrific piece but the casting is very important. (As) you saw with 'Million Dollar Quartet,' finding those kind of multi-talented people is a key piece of the puzzle."

"Blue Man Group" is another show Lewis has been waiting to present in Sacramento because its touring production was previously formatted for arenas. Now that it's been scaled back to its original theater-style production, Lewis felt it would work well in the Community Center Theater.

"It's just an iconic show which continues to draw audiences," Lewis said.

"Flashdance" is based on the 1983 film directed by Adrian Lyne. The movie was the initial collaboration between mega-producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The theater production includes hit songs from the movie including the Academy Award- winning title track "Flashdance – What a Feeling," "Maniac," "Gloria," "Manhunt" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." In addition, 16 new songs were written for the musical.

The season's anchor will be the three-week run of "Wicked," which will likely sell out again as it did in 2012.

"It really is back by popular demand," Lewis said.
