A cold spring storm is expected to kick up wind and deliver a quick shot of heavy snow in the mountains, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm is expected to arrive late this afternoon, making driving hazardous in the Sierra, with up to 6 inches of snow falling at elevations above 6,000 feet and winds gusting up to 60 mph over mountain ridge overnight.
Snow in the mountains and rain in the valley is likely to continue through the night and into Monday morning, the weather service said.
Holly Osborne, a meteorologist with the weather service in Sacramento, attributed the change in weather to a low-pressure system.
Less than 2 inches of snow is forecast down to around 4,000 feet elevation, Osborne said, with snow levels possibly dropping to 3,500 feet by Monday morning.
Rain showers of less than 0.20 inches could spatter the valley. In the foothills, rain will measure less than 0.50 inches, she said.
By Tuesday, winds will subside and valley daytime temperatures are forecast as much as 10 degrees above normal. Much of the Central Valley will see Wednesday highs reach into the 80s.
Dry, mild weather is forecast from Thursday into next weekend, Osborne said.
