Re "Drugs you toss could end up in your water" (Editorials, April 5): Improper disposal of unused prescription drugs is a health issue that extends beyond the effect of chemicals in our environment, and illustrates the larger problem of medication non-adherence.
Nearly 45 percent of people have one or more chronic conditions requiring medication but about 3 out of 4 don't take their medications as directed, often leading to medical emergencies, hospitalization, and even death -- and costing our health system billions each year while producing waste that ends up in our environment.
Script Your Future is a national public awareness campaign championed by the U.S. Surgeon General, with nearly 50 partners in the Sacramento area working together to raise awareness about the importance of taking medication as directed for better health, improved quality of life and reduced health system costs.
