Re "Obama offers a compromise on budget deficit" (Editorials, April 6): Once again, according to the editorial board of The Bee, it is the evil Republicans who hold up progress on President Barack Obama's fiscal plans.
They argue for this by saying Obama's proposal would reduce the deficit by $1.8 trillion over 10 years. Of course there will be tax increases on the rich and yes, some middle class tax increases for a total of about $680 million over 10 years.
Sounds good, $1.8 trillion in cuts and only increasing the tax burden by $680 million. But there is only one problem that the editorial board failed to mention. Under Obama's proposal, $1.2 trillion of the $1.8 trillion in the cuts would be used to replace sequester cuts already made. That means there are actually only $600 billion in cuts. $680 billion in tax increases for only $600 billion in cuts. Why are Republicans opposed?
