Re "Fallen warrior faces battle of a lifetime" (Page A1, March 31): At its best, karate and other martial arts encourage a sense of serenity and balance with a respect and even love towards one's opponent.
By contrast, I am appalled by the anger and brutality which are encouraged and utilized by the practitioners of the so-called "mixed martial arts" (or "cage fighters"). The horrible injury suffered by Devin Johnson was not at all exceptional.
I know that some will point out that these activities are increasingly popular, that many people pay to see them, and that The Bee is only giving the public what it wants to see.
I would respond that at one time a great many people went to see gladiators kill one another and to see Christians mauled and eaten by lions.
Just "giving the people what(ever) they want." Have we come no farther than this?
