Golf: Course report

Published: Wednesday, Apr. 10, 2013 - 12:00 am | Page 6C

The Bee posse's weekly update of the latest in area conditions, bargains, etc.

Course – What you need to know

Ancil Hoffman – Greens smooth but still a little slow three weeks after aerification; 14th green still the weakest link and No. 5 still being played from forward tee

Bing Maloney – Very good; great coverage in fairways, greens so firm that even short chips result in echoing thud when ball lands; six days before aerification

Diamond Oaks – Very nice; greens still poa-annua bumpy, but not bad; pro shop always receives high marks for friendliness, helpfulness

Lockeford Springs – Rough is brutal with lost balls a real possibility; greens true but on slow side

Morgan Creek – From a player returning after two years: Really noticed how much more forgiving it is; although greens slower, course in general more enjoyable

Stevinson Ranch – Out-of-town special report: While fairways and tees exceptional as always, greens ravaged by what appears to be insect infestation

Timber Creek – Lush everywhere; greens smooth/fast downhill and grainy/slower uphill with lots of break; better rates available five days in advance

Wild Wings – Bermuda fairways perking up, but greens still struggling to come back four weeks after aerification

Aerified last week: Alta Sierra, Antelope Greens, Apple Mountain, Bartley Cavanaugh, Catta Verdera, Empire Ranch, Mather, WildHawk

Aerified this week: Bass Lake, Turkey Creek

Scheduled to aerify next week: Bing Maloney, Diamond Oaks
