SAN FRANCISCO The Pacific-12 Conference announced plans Tuesday to commission an independent review of officiating during the league tournament after comments by the conference's coordinator of officials raised questions about its integrity.
The review will be done by "experts who are entirely independent of the Pac-12 Conference," the league said. The investigation is expected to be completed by June.
Ed Rush resigned as the conference's coordinator of officials Thursday. He told the Associated Press he was just trying to "lighten the mood" in a tense locker room when he "jokingly" made offers of $5,000 or a trip to Mexico for any referee who disciplined Arizona coach Sean Miller during the league tournament.
The Pac-12's officiating program has endured a swarm of public criticism since the incident became public and questions about whether Rush was joking persist.
Some reports also have accused Rush of creating a culture of bullying.
Louisville The father of Russ Smith says the junior guard will leave school to enter the NBA draft.
Russ Smith Sr. said the Cardinals' leading scorer "did it all" during his college career that culminated with Louisville's 82-76 victory over Michigan on Monday night for the NCAA championship.
Smith averaged 18.7 points this season, including 22.3 in six NCAA Tournament games.
Coach Rick Pitino went to New Orleans to watch the Cardinals' women's team play Connecticut in the NCAA championship game but without his men's team.
Under NCAA rules, neither the school nor Pitino could pay for the players to get to New Orleans to attend the game.
The NCAA says it granted a waiver to Louisville early Tuesday that would have allowed the school to pay for the trip, but the school says it had already made plans to bring the players home from Atlanta.
Kansas Guard Ben McLemore announced he will enter the NBA draft following perhaps the most successful season by a freshman in the school's history.
The second-team All-American is expected to be a lottery pick in June after breaking the Jayhawks' freshman scoring record held by Danny Manning. McLemore averaged 15.9 points a game.
Indiana Victor Oladipo, a first-team All-American as a junior, announced his decision to enter the NBA draft.
Oladipo, who is on track to graduate in May, was the Hoosiers' second-leading scorer, averaging 13.6 points. He averaged 6.3 rebounds.
Duke Senior forward Ryan Kelly will be out 12 weeks after having surgery on his injured right foot.
Kelly missed 13 games after hurting the foot Jan. 8 against Clemson. He returned for the win over Miami on March 2. Coach Mike Krzyzewski said he expects Kelly to return to 100 percent health and pursue an NBA career.
