Elk Grove will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. penning of "Letter from Birmingham Jail," at a community forum hosted by the city's multicultural committee tonight at 8 p.m. in City Council chambers.
In the essay, King articulates the principle that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," making it a powerful reminder of the civil rights struggle.
Dr. Bernice Bass de Martinez, chairwoman of the foreign languages department at California State University, Sacramento, will read the letter and lead a community discussion.
The event is free and open to the public. Copies of the letter will be available at the meeting and at the committee's website at www.elkgrovecity.org/multicultural.
