The awards were presented Sunday in Oakland.

Renée C. Byer's photos of "A Grandfather's Sorrow and Love" earned first-place honors for feature picture story. Byer was named a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in the feature photography category for this series of photos depicting Napa artist Don Hatfield and his journey to win guardianship of his three young grandchildren.

José Luis Villegas won a first-place award in feature photography for "Stay at Home Father," a photo of 63-year-old George Nied, a stay-at-home and second-time dad, with children Jack, 6, and Jenna, 5, at their North Natomas home.

Paul Kitagaki Jr. won first-place awards in the news picture story category for his series of 12 photos of the "2012 London Olympics" and in the category of best San Francisco Giants season photo for his "World Series Celebration" shot.

The World Series photo captured San Francisco relief pitcher Sergio Romo and catcher Buster Posey leaping for joy as they celebrated winning Game 4 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers.
