Re "Congress flouts majority will" (Letters, April 17): Majority rule is tyranny. Minority rule is also. Knowing this, the founders did not give us a democracy but a constitutional republic with all power residing in the individual...the people. Certain rights were so important that the authors required them to be codified in the Bill of Rights.
Why? So an ignorant but passionate majority could not deny the individual those most valuable of rights. Freedom of speech, assembly, and that pesky "right to keep and bear arms" to keep that pesky government in check.
But someone kills with a gun, regulate lawful gun owners? By that same "logic" someone kills using a pressure cooker. Regulate pressure cookers over one cup in size. No, it's not the thing but the person that kills.
Ignorant majority rule cannot take away our natural rights.
