Garvella, Sargent win Coover scholarships

Rocklin's Shannon Garvella and Bella Vista's Brynn Sargent received Clarke Coover Scholarship Awards from the Sac-Joaquin Section at a ceremony Tuesday in Lodi.

The $1,500 scholarships are given to one boy and one girl each year.

Another 46 athletes received A. Dale Lacky scholarships of $1,000 or $600, given for outstanding athletic performance, community service and academic success.

Area athletes awarded $1,000 scholarships include Placer's Kirstin Schauble, Foresthill's Sadie Stroup, Dixon's Alexander LaBass and El Camino's James Wiley.

Area $600 scholarship recipients include Oak Ridge's Haley Anderson; Sacramento Country Day's Mary-Clare Bosco and Morgan Bennett-Smith; Oakmont's Kathryn Carte; Kennedy's Makenzie Fong; El Camino's Elizabeth Kamine; Liberty Ranch's Sierra MacLeod; River Valley's Taylor Massengale; West Campus' Amanda Meroux; Colfax's Will Buell; Forest Lake Christian's Joshua Dreschler; Sheldon's Ryan Manning; Nevada Union's Kendall Pawlowski; Galt's Andrew Rudnick; Golden Sierra's Rocky Sacks; Pioneer's Kyle Scheuermann; and McClatchy's Derek Taylor.

Cordova's Dorner has state's top 400 time

Nia Dorner of Cordova, the CIF state 400-meter runner-up last year, has the top time in the state and is No. 6 nationally, according to

Dorner, a senior, ran a state-best 54.54 seconds to win the 400 on April 6 at the 34th Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Rosemont transfer also won the 200 in 24.16, the second-fastest time in the state this season.

Jesuit senior sprinter Austin Mitsch is No. 1 in Northern California in the boys 100 and 200 meters.

His season-best 100 of 10.69, run April 10 at a dual meet, is third best in the state. His 200 time of 21.84, run at the April 5 Arcadia Invitational, is No. 8 in the state.

More area athletes commit to colleges

These area athletes have announced college signings or verbal commitments:

• Sheldon basketball player Ryan Manning to Air Force.

• Sacramento High basketball player Breanna Garrett to Sacramento State.

• Folsom swimmer Bret Bonzell to Boston College.

• Oak Ridge basketball player Josh Simms and cheer athlete Siena Potts to Concordia; diver Sydney Newman to Pepperdine and cheer athlete Nicolette Wichert to TCU.

Sac High's Massari named top D-II coach

Sacramento High's Michele Massari has been named Cal-Hi Sports' State Division II Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

Massari has a 132-35 career record with three consecutive section titles and five Metro Conference banners.
