A Rosemont woman accused of killing her newborn baby in January was arraigned Thursday afternoon on a single charge of murder.

Courtney Kathleen Addington, 24, appeared briefly in Sacramento Superior Court, looking back several times at audience members who appeared to be her family. She did not enter a plea.

Addington has retained Sacramento defense attorney Jesse Ortiz, though another attorney stood in for him during the brief hearing.

Sacramento County sheriff's deputies arrested Addington on Tuesday night, nearly three months after deputies found a baby's body in a trash bag under a bed in the woman's Rosemont home. The umbilical cord was still attached, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Earlier that day, Addington was admitted to Mercy General Hospital for severe bleeding. Doctors believed she had recently given birth and a pregnancy test confirmed their suspicions, but Addington denied the claim, according to court records.

Hospital employees then notified law enforcement, asking for a welfare check on a possible newborn baby. Deputies later found the baby girl's body.

The Coroner's Office did not determine the baby's cause of death but did determine she was born alive and did breathe before dying, according to court documents.

Sheriff's detectives allege that Addington was home alone when she gave birth to the baby and that she was responsible for the baby's death and its placement in the bag.

Court records also indicate that family members and Addington's boyfriend asked on multiple occasions whether she was pregnant, but she denied it.

She blamed the changes in her body on irritable bowel syndrome, which she cited at the hospital as well, according to the documents.
