Regional Digest: UC Davis holds second in men's golf tourney

Ben Corfee had an eagle 2 on his first hole and made it stand up the rest of the way as he fired a 2-under-par 70 to lead the host UC Davis men's golf team into second place after the first round of the Winchester Classic at Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista, UCD reported.

The Aggies shot a 1-over 289 to trail Big West Conference rival UC Santa Barbara by two strokes. Cal State Fullerton, also from the Big West, is third, a stroke behind the Aggies, while Nevada and Oklahoma Christian are tied for fourth at 6 over. Sacramento State is seventh.

Corfee is tied for second place, one stroke behind Brett Silvernail of UCSB.

Hornets lose in baseball

• Texas-San Antonio (20-17, 5-7 Western Athletic Conference) scored the final seven runs of the game to earn a 7-2 victory over visiting Sac State (21-16, 7-6) in the opener of a three-game baseball series, Sac State reported.

The Roadrunners scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings before adding three runs in the eighth inning to put the game away.

Sac State used extra base hits to score both of its runs. In the second inning, Will Soto (Elk Grove High School) tripled to right center and scored on a groundout by Scotty Burcham for the first run of the game. In the fourth inning, Justin Higley (Jesuit) hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year to give the Hornets a 2-0 advantage.

• Adam Young hit a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning, and UC Davis held on to defeat UC Riverside 4-3 at Dobbins Stadium for its first Big West Conference win of the season, UCD reported. The Aggies improved to 13-22 overall and 1-9 in the Big West. The Highlanders fell to 17-16 and 6-4.

General

• Kyle Miller defeated Sebastian Bustamante 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6) at No. 2 singles to give the UC Davis men's tennis team (7-11) a 4-3 nonconference victory over Loyola Marymount (4-18) in Los Angeles, UCD reported on its athletics website.

• Elizabeth Datino and Hannah Mirza combined for nine goals, and attacker Meghan Jordan tallied a career-high six assists, helping the UC Davis women's lacrosse team (5-8, 2-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) surge to a 19-12 victory over San Diego State (8-6, 3-3) at Aggie Stadium, according to UCD.
