Re "The big divide over water" (Forum, April 14): I find it hard to believe the proposed delta tunnels are so close to being built. Fresh water diversion and long distance transport is a centuries-old idea long out of place in the 21st century. The south state should instead pursue its own water independence. A combination of waste water reclamation and ocean desalinization can come a long way to meeting demand.
Where is the academic community in this debate? Has the Legislature not requested benefit analysis for alternative solutions? Instead we are saddled with this ridiculous and expensive product of a numb and ridged water bureaucracy and the water industrial complex. Let's inject science and reason into this debate before it's too late.
