Regional Digest: UC Davis golf team leads Winchester Classic

The host UC Davis men shot a 1-over-par 289 Saturday in the second round of the Winchester Classic in Meadow Vista and led Cal State Fullerton by four strokes entering today's final round, UCD reported.

Tyler Raber (Davis High School), Matt Hansen and Matt Seramin shot par 72s as the Aggies overtook first-day leader UC Santa Barbara at Winchester Country Club.

UC Davis' Ben Corfee had a 73 and was tied for fourth at 1-under 143, four shots behind leader Sam Johnston of Oklahoma Christian. Raber was tied for sixth at 144.

Sac State's bats heat up

against Texas-San Antonio

• The Sacramento State baseball team used a 16-hit attack to beat host Texas-San Antonio 12-1, according to the Sac State athletics website.

Nathan Lukes (Center High School) had four hits and two RBIs, and Will Soto (Elk Grove High) homered and had three RBIs for the Hornets.

Brennan Leitao allowed only one run in seven innings to pick up the victory for Sac State (22-16, 8-6 Western Athletic Conference.

The Roadrunners (20-18, 5-8) had three hits in the game, shortened to eight innings by the WAC's 10-run rule.

• Steven Patterson hit a three-run homer in the eighth and helped turn a double play in the ninth as host UC Davis beat UC Riverside 7-4, UCD reported.

The Aggies (14-22, 2-9 Big West Conference) won their third consecutive game.

The Highlanders (17-17, 6-5) scored once in the ninth. But Patterson made a diving stop on a grounder to second to begin a double play, and third baseman Paul Politi ended the game by grabbing a foul ball over the wall down the left-field line.

• The Cal, Stanford and USC women advanced to this morning's varsity grand eight final at the Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Sac State reported. Sac State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four will race in third-level finals this morning.

• Trevor Ehlenbach took the 1,500 meters in a season-best 3 minutes, 54.98 seconds, and Danielle Steffen won the pole vault with a personal-best 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches for UC Davis at its Woody Wilson Classic, UCD reported.

• Carmen Eggert and Hannah Curran scored in overtime to lift the 18th-ranked UC Davis women's water polo team over 20th-ranked and visiting Pacific 6-4, UCD reported. The Aggies (14-15, 1-6) won the tiebreaker over the Tigers (16-13, 1-6) for the seventh seed in the Big West Conference tournament, which begins Friday in Irvine.
