U.S. Forest Service campgrounds, beaches, forest roads and hiking trails in the Lake Tahoe basin will begin opening in May.
Most recreation sites will open by mid-May, officials said, but a few are planned to open as early as May 10, depending on weather.
A few openings are scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, and some others may be delayed because of copper thefts at 15 sites.
Before recreation sites can open to the public, the Forest Service must hire crews to staff and manage them, clean up from winter, remove safety hazards and wait for the danger of a freeze to pass before turning on water systems.
Early visitors to recreation sites are reminded to park off the road, avoid vegetation and the blocking of access gates, pack out all trash and clean up after pets.
A list of projected dates can be found at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/ltbmu/RecAreaStatus .
Information is also available at the forest supervisor's office, (530) 543-2694, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
