Re "Texas blast hit volunteers hard" (Page A7, April 20): If Texas Gov. Rick Perry came to you a California business owner telling you about making more profit and saving costs in red tape and business regulations by moving your business, your family and workers to Texas, would you put your faith in him?
Personally I put my faith in California, which has strict zoning regulations that would never allow a fertilizer manufacturing plant with many highly explosive chemicals to be a neighbor to apartment complexes, homes, schools and senior housing facilities. I put my faith in health and safety regulations and oversight that would ensure safe storage, handling procedures, emergency and safety procedures, and accurate records of large amounts of explosive fertilizer chemicals.
My sympathy goes out to the survivors in West, Tex. They know the hidden costs of business as usual, Rick Perry style. -- Thomas Pope, Sacramento
