Kudos to: Michele Steeb, executive director of St. John's Shelter program for women and children

Accomplishment: Received Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus Allied Professional Award

Details: Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, presented the award to Steeb for her leadership, creativity and commitment to improve the plight of crime victims. Since 1985, St. John's has provided a safe haven for 25,000 women and children. Under Steeb's leadership, St. John's has launched two employment training programs, a cafe and a child development center.

Kudos to: Susan G. Komen, Sacramento Valley Affiliate

Accomplishment: Awarded $750,000 to 21 local organizations in its 19-county area

Details: Grants were given to organizations to provide education, support services, mammography screening and diagnostic programs. The grants were made possible thanks to events such as the Komen Sacramento Valley Race for the Cure. Last year, 13,000 participants and volunteers raised $1.2 million to fund local programs. The next race is May 11 at Cal Expo.
