This, that and the other thing:

• Dropping the F-bomb on national television usually trips the alarm system and causes red lights to flash at the Federal Communications Commission.

The tightly wound folks there take such matters seriously and demand immediate answers. Strong repercussions follow.

But following Saturday's emotional speech by David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, where he proclaimed, "This is our (bleeping) city," FCC chairman Julius Genachowski did the right thing.

He tweeted his support of Ortiz and the city of Boston.

"Big Papi" couldn't have said it any better.

• Matt Cain makes his fifth start of the season tonight for the Giants with a 7.15 ERA that stands out like a Maloof brother at a "Here We Stay" rally.

Not only is Cain 0-2, the Giants have lost all of his starts. Giants fans need to go back to the 2010 season to find San Francisco losing four consecutive Cain starts.

If Cain continues to struggle, maybe Barry Zito can work with him in the bullpen.

Who would have thought that?

• It's doubtful Kobe Bryant could have carried the Lakers deep into the NBA playoffs, but it would have been fun to watch.

Not since Michael Jordan has one player meant so much to one team in the postseason.
