The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday night took the unusual step of appointing a mayor pro tem to run council meetings when Mayor Kevin Johnson and Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby aren't around.

Councilman Jay Schenirer earned the honor, which comes with the added benefit of a couple of extra words in his title but no more money.

Johnson has been known to miss a meeting or two – especially with the Kings saga continuing – and normally the duty of running the meeting falls to Ashby.

But Ashby is expecting her third child May 9 and said she expects to miss a couple of council meetings.

The pro tem position will be in effect until Ashby returns to the council.
