The Sacramento State men's tennis team beat Weber State 4-0 in Gold River on Saturday to earn a spot in the Big Sky Conference final and a shot at an NCAA Tournament berth, the school's website reported.
The top-seeded Hornets (16-12) have won 12 of 15 matches and will face third-seeded Montana for the title at 10 a.m. today at the Gold River Racquet Club. Montana beat second-seeded Montana State 4-0. The winner of today's match goes to the NCAA Tournament.
Aliaksandr Malko, Sean Kolar (Del Oro High School), and Niranjan Ram earned straight-set singles victories for the Hornets. The teams of Malko and Marek Marksoo and Tom Miller and Henrik Raag won their doubles matches.
Pitching propels Hornets to win over Louisiana Tech
Sac State right-hander Brennan Leitao went seven innings and Sutter McLoughlin (Rio Americano) recorded his 11th save as the Hornets (25-18, 9-8 Western Athletic Conference) beat visiting Louisiana Tech (15-29, 3-14) 1-0 at John Smith Field, according to the Hornets' website.
Leitao (6-2) allowed five hits and struck out five. McLoughlin struck out three and didn't allow a hit.
The Hornets scored their run in the third. Dane Fujinaka reached base when his popup was dropped, and he later scored on a throwing error.
UC Irvine (27-12, 9-5 Big West Conference) scored five runs in the fourth inning to put UC Davis away in an 8-2 victory in Irvine, according to UCD's website.
Steven Patterson extended his hitting streak to 10 games for the Aggies (15-25, 3-11) with a single.
Becca Bliss' second solo homer of the game with one out in the ninth gave host Portland State (19-27, 11-4 Big Sky) a 6-5 softball win over Sac State (21-18, 6-6), the Hornets' website reported.
JJ Wagoner had three hits and two RBIs, and Chandler Wagner had three hits as UC Davis swept a softball doubleheader against visiting Cal State Fullerton, winning the first game 1-0 in eight innings and the second 3-2.
Carmen Eggert and Jessica Dunn each had three goals, but the UCD women's water polo team (14-17) lost to UC Santa Barbara (20-14) 10-9 in the consolation semifinals of the Big West Conference tournament in Irvine, according to UCD's website.
