Benefits of 'biosimilar's bill not given its due

Re " 'Sponsors' of bills often in shadows" (Page A1, April 28): I was dismayed that The Bee ignored the true value of Sen. Jerry Hill's intentions in sponsoring SB 598. The bill is just what California needs in safely bringing a new and more affordable FDA-approved class of medicines to market to aid in the fight against melanoma and other life-threatening diseases.

Biosimilars hold the promise of improving quality of life and reducing both disability and mortality rates in patients who suffer from melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. This common-sense legislation is welcome news for our patients who are willing to try new, more affordable drugs but worry about their efficacy and safety. We applaud Sen. Hill for carrying legislation that puts our patients first.
