Coming out is difficult and should be applauded

Re "Why didn't Collins raise his hand earlier?" (Leading off, April 30): Is Victor Contreras serious? Unless you are gay, you have absolutely no idea how difficult it is to make the decision to come out, a pronouncement that will follow you the rest of your life.

Coming out is a process that, for most of us, occurs every time you meet someone new, and a positive reaction isn't guaranteed. Can it be dangerous? Ask anyone who has been bullied, beaten up or lost a job for being gay. Please don't presume to judge Collins' timing; as he himself said, the public groundswell in favor of marriage equality he witnessed recently in Washington, D.C., helped him make this decision.

Unless you yourself understand this issue from personal experience, please sit down and be quiet while the rest of us applaud this man's courage.
