Cinco de Mayo's more of a time for tequila than wine, but south-of-the-border festivities are going down all the same Sunday at the Old Sugar Mill.
The Clarksburg facility, which hosts 10 winery tasting rooms, is hosting a Cinco de Mayo soiree Sunday. Food trucks will serve Mexican food and other eats, and each winery will take part in a salsa-making competition. Piñatas will also be on standby for the breaking, along with live music.
Admission to this Cinco de Mayo celebration won't cost you a centavo. This free event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Old Sugar Mill is at 35265 Willow Ave. in Clarksburg. For more information: (916) 916-744-1615; www.oldsugarmill.com.
A taste of Mexico
Meanwhile, a taste of Mexico can be found in Amador wine country. Borjon Winery, which is the rare Latino-owned winery in the Sierra foothills, will host its third annual Vino en Mayo party Saturday.
This event celebrates the Mexican American heritage of its proprietors, the Borjon family. Mariachis will provide the music, and guests can sample Mexican food and Borjon's wines.
This fiesta runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $20, which includes a keepsake glass, or $15 for Borjon's wine club members. Borjon Winery is at 11270 Shenandoah Road in Plymouth. For more information: (209) 245-3087; www.borjonwinery.com.
Tequila Week at Grange
If you're still craving tequila, Grange has you covered from today through Sunday. The downtown restaurant and bar has dubbed the next few days "tequila week" and will highlight its own house blend of tequila, which was crafted in conjunction with Herradura, a prominent distiller in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
This tequila is a reposado, meaning it was aged in oak barrels for at least two months but less than a year.
Grange (10th and J streets, Sacramento; 916-492-4450) is featuring a line of $8 cocktails during happy hour with this tequila, including an old-fashioned with cherry bitters and lemon peel and a margarita with Mexican lime and agave. Happy hour runs from 3 to 6 p.m. For more information: (916) 492-4450; www.grangesacramento.com
