Continuing a trend dating back to 2006, gasoline consumption in California declined in 2012, according to the California Board of Equalization.

In 2012, 14.5 billion gallons of gasoline were used, down from about 14.6 billion in 2011.

Even with reduced consumption, BOE member George Runner noted that "Californians paid a record $8.3 billion in fuel taxes last year."

In-state diesel use also declined slightly in 2012 – 2.6 billion gallons, compared with 2.62 billion in 2011. Diesel use is one indicator of in-state trucking commerce.
