UCD men fall short in bid for golf three-peat

The UC Davis men came up short in their quest for a third consecutive Big West Conference title, finishing third Tuesday at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, the school reported.

The Aggies were 10 over par in the final round for a three-round total of 26-over 290, three shots behind co-champions Pacific and Cal State Fullerton. Pacific won a playoff on the first hole to earn the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.

UC Davis began the day in third place, five strokes behind leader Pacific and one behind Fullerton. The Aggies led midway through the final round and were within one to three strokes most of the rest of the way.

Ben Corfee shot a 1-under 71 and Matt Hansen a 72 to lead UC Davis in the final round. Hansen was the Aggies' top finisher, tying for fifth at 3-over 219, two shots behind medalist Eric Sugimoto of Pacific.

• The UC Davis women, four-time defending Big West champions, open play in the NCAA Championships on May 9-11 in Norman, Okla., as the sixth seed in the Central Regional, the school reported.

Sac State men rise in America Sky

The Sacramento State men moved up four spots into a tie for third after two rounds of the America Sky Conference Championship at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, the school reported.

The Hornets were 4 under for the round for a 12-over 588 total, seven strokes behind leader Southern Utah.

Sac State's Jordan Weir was tied for second place at 2-under 142, one shot behind Binghamton's Bryce Edmister, after a 2-under 70.
