To go along with allergens in the Sacramento air, add smoke from wildfires burning up north.
Some Sacramento area residents awoke to the smell of smoke this morning. The smoky skies were the result of two timber fires burning in the mountains about east of Chico.
A north wind blew smoke from the wildland blazes overnight into the Sacramento region. Some smoke is expected to linger today, but the hope is that lessening winds will allow firefighters to gain control of the flames and prevent smoke from heading down valley to sully Sacramento skies.
"We will still have some winds today, so we will still smell it," said National Weather Service forecaster Jason Clapp. "I would say we will probably see less smoke generated because we expect less wind pushing the fire."
North winds are predicted to pick up again on Saturday, although not as strong as last Tuesday, said Clapp.
Meanwhile, temperatures are going up. Today's expected high of 94 is about 15 degrees above normal for early May.
"We are still warm," said Clapp. "We have a big blocking high sitting out in the Pacific, giving us the jet stream that went over us. That gave us the winds. That ridge is building and moving slightly closer, warming up the temperatures, too.
"The closer that ridge and high moves to the California coast, the lighter the winds will be. That is good."
