Once-Thought Extinct Fish Returns to Pyramid LakeLoading
  • RB Pyramid Lake Trout
The Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex in Gardnerville, Nevada on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. A species once-thought extinct - the Pilot Peak strain of Lahontan cutthroat trout - has been re-discovered and returned to its original home north of Reno, where it is growing to its fabled 20-plus pound size and sparking a boom in fishing and recreation and interest in recovery of endangered species. It is the largest freshwater trout in the world. Some have also been returned to Fallen Leaf Lake, near Tahoe, where they spawned in the wild last year for the first time in 70 years. There are dreams of restoring the fish to the entire Truckee River watershed in California and Nevada and to Lake Tahoe.
