"1001 Secrets Every Birder Should Know" by Sharon Stitler
Running Press, $20, 296 pages
For those of us who are visual learners, it's great that this book shows as much as it tells. That, in addition to the snarky style of the author, who runs the blog Birdchick.com, makes this a lively tome even for those who don't consider themselves hard-core birders. Among the crazy things you'll learn: "Birds of prey have a spike on their tongues that faces the back of their mouths and helps send chunks of meat down their throats."

Into the overstuffed outdoors energy-bar market comes a new entrant YaffBars. What makes these bars different? Well, to quote from the website, it's "the world's first 'people food' bar designed to be shared with your best friend." In other words, it contains no killer chocolate for Rover. Bars come in flavors such as banana-peanut butter and honey almond cranberry. Knowing my dogs, they'd eat the wrapper as well as the bar.
"The Vast Unknown: America's First Ascent of Everest," by Broughton Coburn
Crown Books, $26, 300 pages
In these days when everyone from your dentist to the butcher at the grocery store has climbed Mount Everest, it's easy to forget how daunting the task once seemed. (Actually, hold those emails; it's still somewhat daunting.) This book is like a time capsule from the Cold War, showing how in 1963, a bunch of crazy American mountaineers embarked on a plan to ascend via the never-before-summited west ridge, while racing a Chinese group to the top. Spoiler alert: Not everyone makes it out alive.
