Re "County must trim death rate of black children" (Editorials, May 6): Children and babies dying in high numbers is unacceptable, no matter their race. People should not have more children than they can care for. The county could prevent deaths by providing and encouraging birth control to young men and women who apply for assistance.
There seems to be a higher rate of abuse by unrelated adult males in the home with young children. Unrelated boyfriends may not be as invested in young babies as the kids' fathers in the home would be. This problem might be avoided by not having children out of wedlock.
