Re "Hotel deal raises Prop. 13. issue" (Capitol & California, May 6): The story published by The Bee outlines the change of ownership problem that among other things allowed a Texas billionaire to avoid $1 million in taxes by going through a Proposition 13 loophole.
Meanwhile, the California Chamber of Commerce calls my AB 188, an attempt to close that loophole, a job killer. What really kills our jobs is letting Michael Dell take away $1 million each year that could go to jobs: teachers, police officers and people who fix our streets.
Without raising any tax rate, we could recoup some of that California money for Californians and reduce the share of the tax burden that rests on homeowners and small business people. Though the story says the bill has been tabled, it is alive and well, and will be voted on in committee on May 13.
