Re "Ease rules on who provides primary care? No" (Viewpoints, March 29): As a group of nurse practitioners, we would like to respond to Dr. Paul R. Phinney's op-ed. He clearly doesn't understand nurse practitioner scope of practice. His assertion that non-physician care would jeopardize quality and safety is contrary to evidence presented by the Institute of Medicine, which highlights studies that show nurse practitioners provide equal care and outcomes to primary care physicians. Nurse practitioners receive high rates of patient satisfaction.
We value our physician colleagues. They are needed to care for patients with complex health problems. Our intent is not to practice beyond our education, but to practice to the fullest extent our education has prepared us for. We provide quality care for patients in a variety of practice settings. Under Obamacare, there will be as many as 7 million more insured Californians. Nurse practitioners will play a vital role in providing quality healthcare for our citizens.
