Re "SMUD wants rate increase" (Our Region, May 7): I would opt for a time-of-use electricity rate in a heartbeat. When we lived in Humboldt County, PG&E offered us the option to pay different electricity rates based on peak and off-peak times.
We had to buy a second meter to record the split use for about $50. A family of 5 at the time, we started using our high energy appliances like the washer, dryer and dishwasher during off-peak hours. We paid off the cost of the meter in less than two months.
Now the power companies ask us to be do-gooders and perform the same power conservation to reduce load on their system so they can sell the saved power to the power gluttons who don't care.
