Sacramento area residents are invited today to attend the premiere of "The Chain," a short documentary about events set in motion by a kidney donor and the "chain" of transplants sparked by her donation.

The film is produced by Participant Media, which also produced "An Inconvenient Truth" and "The Help."

Screenings of the 25-minute film will be at the state Capitol in Room 126 starting at 10:30 a.m. Added screenings will follow at approximately 11:10 a.m. and 11:50 a.m.

The film calls attention to the need for living donors to pledge one of their kidneys to those in medical need. California's need for kidney transplants continues to grow, with the state's waiting list increasing by 700 per year since 2005, organizers said.

The movement to attract more living donors for kidneys is spurred by the launch of a statewide initiative called Living Donation California. Information is at www.livingdonationcalifornia.org.
