A man was taken into custody late Thursday after a standoff with Sacramento Police in the Del Paso Heights area.
The incident began as a welfare check about 2:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Grand Avenue, according to Officer Doug Morse, police spokesman. Relatives said the man was Martin Fitzpatrick.
When police arrived, Fitzpatrick barricaded the doors and shut the windows, said Heather Cargill, the niece of Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick's two children were also in the home.
"I called CPS (Child Protective Services) after the school told me my cousins didn't show up," Cargill told The Bee.
A SWAT team, hostage negotiators and more than a dozen patrol cars responded to the scene. Over several hours, Fitzpatrick refused to come out, Cargill said.
Morse said the suspect surrendered at 8:20 p.m. The two children were found safe.
