Sacramento police and fire crews recovered a body Friday evening from the Sacramento River near Riverside Boulevard.

Sacramento Police Sgt. Andrew Pettit said the body is that of a male and may be the driver of a vehicle that went into the river at Sutterville Road and Riverside Boulevard, near Interstate 5, late Tuesday.

Pettit said officers responded to a report of a vehicle accident at 11:48 p.m., but were unable to find any sign of a vehicle when they got to the scene.

On Wednesday morning, officers returned to the location and found evidence that a vehicle had gone into the river. Pettit said divers found a vehicle and spotted a body, but were unable to recover it at the time.

About 5:40 p.m. Friday, an individual reported seeing a body in the water off Riverside Boulevard, downriver from where the vehicle was found.

Police said there were no signs of foul play and the case has been turned over to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
