Wanted: Public relations director for an NFL team.

Job description: Must keep local and national media from writing factual news stories and profiles on a perpetually losing organization, and instead push critics to recall the franchise's "greatness" of the 1970s.

Qualifications: Candidates must work Sundays, wear nothing but Silver and Black and be committed to excellence (wink, wink).

Apply to: Mark Davis, Oakland Raiders.

Zak Gilbert's former position in Alameda is open after he reportedly was fired by Davis over the weekend in the wake of a "negative" profile of the team and late owner Al Davis in an April issue of Sports Illustrated.

The magazine examined how, upon his arrival last year, general manager Reggie McKenzie had to take the Raiders' football and business operations out of the 1970s and into the present.

That's not negative; that's factual. And how is Gilbert to blame?

Gilbert, who worked with McKenzie in Green Bay, was a godsend to the media covering the Raiders. Unlike in the Al Davis era, Gilbert and his staff kept the media updated on team transactions, practice schedules, availability of players and coaches, and upcoming team events.

Gilbert did his best to represent the Raiders positively while helping the media do their job. Still, he was fired, through no fault of his own.

Memo to new hire: Good luck with that.
