Highway 12, between Interstate 5 in San Joaquin County and Highway 160 in Sacramento County, will be closed during daytime hours for three days this week, beginning today.
The complete road closure will allow maintenance crews to expedite repairs to the highway, according to a California Department of Transportation news release. All the work will be completed in three days time with the total closure as compared to the alternative, which would have required 15 days with 90-minutes delays using one-way traffic control, officials said.
The closure will be in place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Wednesday and Thursday. Access for local residents, businesses and emergency services will be allowed.
Detours will be posted. Motorists are advised to consider Interstate 80 and Interstate 5 as alternate routes and to allow additional travel time. The signed detour for eastbound Highway 12 traffic will direct motorists to Highway 160 north to Walnut Grove Road, then to Interstate 5 -- a 30-mile, 45-minute detour. Westbound motorists will be directed to I-5 north to Walnut Grove Road, then to Highway 160.
Trucks are encouraged to use I-5 and I-80 as alternative routes.
