The Sacramento area led the top 50 U.S. metro markets in monthly job opening gains in May, according to job listings site Simply Hired.

Sacramento saw a 6.6 percent gain month-to-month.

Nationally, Simply Hired said job openings were up 3.2 percent month-over-month and 38.4 percent year-over-year.

"May showcased job growth across the country and marked the sixth straight month of job growth in the U.S.," said James Beriker, president and CEO of Simply Hired. "This latest report highlights a decrease in job competition nationwide, providing some important traction for continued job momentum.

"These signals are very positive for job growth as we move further into the summer months."

Nationally, Simply Hired said job openings increased in 16 out of 18 industries in May, with automotive (19.3 percent) and agriculture (13.9 percent) showing the largest gains.
