The couple said she paid cash for the first night, then tried to use a credit card that was denied. She then wrote checks totaling $3,500, they said, but none of them cleared. The Rochés pressed charges, and two felony counts were filed against Carpenter, who blamed the case on illness. The matter was dismissed in May after she paid the bill. See story at left
