A Plumas County man missing since May 1 is the apparent victim of an automobile accident in the Feather River Canyon three miles east of Jarbo Gap.
State Transportation Department workers found Clifford Stephan Wade's 1969 Mercury Cougar 30 yards over an embankment Tuesday after they cleared Highway 70 of an unrelated vehicle accident, said Sgt. Steve W. Peay of the Plumas County Sheriff's Office.
The Cougar was in an area thick with trees and brush, which made it difficult to spot from the roadway by passing motorists or by helicopter, Peay said.
Officials believe the human remains found at the scene are those of Wade, 68, of Meadow Valley.
After Wade was reported missing May 3, officials launched a search that included foot patrols as well as a California Highway Patrol helicopter.
Positive identification of the body is pending an investigation by the Butte County Coroner's Office, Peay said.
