Emergency crews rescued six people trapped on a rock in the middle fork of the American River near Auburn on Saturday evening.

Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said it was unclear how the group ended up on the rock in the middle of the river. The rescue scene was between Auburn and Cool.

No one in the group – which appeared to include some teenagers and at least one adult – was wearing a life jacket, Berlant said. One of the first people to be rescued had an injured ankle, Berlant said.

Cal Fire crews were battling raging waters as they made their way to the stranded people. Berlant said several fire department crews from the region assisted in the rescue.
