Re "I'm the leaker, ex-CIA tech says" (Page A1, June 10): Osama bin Laden's greatest victory was not killing 3,000 people on 9/11, but in cowing our government to dismantle the Fourth Amendment protections distinguishing us as a free society.
We do not want an American KGB. Privacy verses safety is a false choice. Government can record our phone calls, emails, and with thermal imaging technology even watch us in our bedrooms. Does technological advancement require we relinquish all privacy?
J. Edgar Hoover remained FBI chief for 50 years by using surveillance to blackmail his adversaries. A database of private communiques obtained without probable cause is a dangerous a threat to our country.
