Re "Refugees should go home" (Letters, June 10): It's frightening that there are people who still make hasty, narrow-minded assumptions of others from differing backgrounds. I know several immigrant families who are trying their best to make ends meet, actively seeking employment for themselves, enrolling in English classes, and coping with the culture shock since day one of their arrival to America from war-torn Iraq and Syria.
Nobody's asking for freebies; they're asking for the same chance each of our ancestors received -- to pursue peace and security. So before we settle on one opinion, we'd first benefit from taking time and attempting to understand the real situation -- that maybe a typical American answer will not defuse an immigrant's personal problem, but one cannot ignorantly avoid the issue either. Then somehow, I hope we will find a positive solution.
