Kudos to: Civil engineering students at Sacramento State

Accomplishment: Students qualified for separate national competitions in steel bridge construction and concrete canoe building

Details: Students in the canoe competition had to develop a durable concrete canoe. Students in the bridge-building event had to design, fabricate and construct a 17-foot-long bridge. It is likely the first time in the history of the Civil Engineering Department that two Sacramento State teams have been sent to the nationals in the same year.

Kudos to: The Niello Co.

Accomplishment: Recipient of the Spirit of Caring award from the Salvation Army

Details: The family-owned auto dealer was honored for its community service and leadership. Niello, a longtime supporter of the Salvation Army, has helped fund projects such as an Oak Park day care center and a transitional living center.

Kudos to: Sondra Roberts of Merrill Gardens in Citrus Heights

Accomplishment: Received Outstanding Executive Director award from the California Assisted Living Association

Details: The award is for providing quality care to residents. Roberts is said to lead by example, working hand-in-hand with her leadership team. She can often be seen working alongside caregivers, according to the Assisted Living Association.
