Two people suffered minor injuries Thursday in a grass fire in the Elk Grove area that burned a barn and several outbuildings.

Chief Tracey Hansen of the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department said the fire was reported at 1:42 p.m. on Pleasant Grove School Road, east of Bradshaw Road, between Sheldon and Bond roads. A tractor that was mowing on the property caught fire, apparently due to a mechanical problem, and the fire spread to dry grass.

The fire burned about 3 acres. Hansen said the firefighting was complicated because the fire ran between three or four parcels with outbuildings, tractors and cars. Several sheds were destroyed and a large barn was damaged.

Hansen said a firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for evaluation. A civilian also suffered minor injury but refused transportation for medical treatment.

Along with Cosumnes firefighters, crews from the Sacramento City, Sacramento Metro and Wilton fire departments were involved in fighting the blaze.

Hansen said the fire serves as a reminder not to mow in the afternoon when dry vegetation is more likely catch fire.
