Job Front: Nurses, retail help top the list

Sacramento-area employers are posting for a wide range of positions from health care to retail to technology and sales.

May's Help Wanted Online report from the state's Employment Development Department shows a diverse list topped by nursing, retail sales and front-line office managers.

Registered nurse positions held their standard spot atop the list with more than 1,050 online postings.

Retail salespersons (737), first-line office supervisors (574), computer systems analysts (557) and customer service representatives (546) rounded out the top five occupations with the most job postings, according to the EDD's report. Retail supervisors, heavy truck and tractor-trailer drivers, computer support, manufacturing sales and management analyst positions rounded out the top 10.

The numbers of postings per occupation were down from the same time last year.

Health care employers, for instance, posted for about 250 more RN positions in the year-ago report; while demand for computer systems analysts dropped by roughly the same number from the previous May.

But that's tempered by the falling numbers of unemployed in the region.

Though the numbers of job ads have been relatively flat over the past few months, the numbers of unemployed slipped below the 25,000 mark for the first time since November 2008, according to the EDD report.

Indeed, unemployment in the Sacramento region fell to 7.8 percent in May, down from April's 8.2 percent, the EDD reported. The regional May figure was more than two points lower than the region's 10.3 percent jobless rate at the same time last year.

In the four-county region, Placer County had the lowest unemployment rate at 7 percent. Yolo County's unemployment rate was 7.9 percent.

The jobless rate in El Dorado and Sacramento counties stood at 8 percent.
