Sacramento's Clean World Partners today broke ground on a project to extensively expand its anaerobic digester system in south Sacramento.
The system opened last December at 8550 Fruitridge Road. Clean World and Sacramento's Atlas Disposal Industries partnered on the project.
The system currently is capable of converting 10,000 tons per year of food waste and organic materials from area food-processing companies, restaurants and supermarkets into renewable natural gas, electricity and soil-amendment products.
The expanded system will process 40,000 tons of waste per year, which officials said will make it the largest commercial-scale, high solids anaerobic digester system in the United States.
The expansion is scheduled to be completed in December.
