Who would have thought?

The Giants, winners of two World Series championships in the past three seasons, are struggling to keep their heads above San Francisco Bay while the neighboring A's are making one of baseball's biggest splashes.

Both teams approach the halfway point of the season playing at unexpected levels.

The Giants entered Monday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles at 38-37, the team's worst mark after 75 games since it went 72-90 in 2008.

The amazing A's enter tonight's game against Cincinnati at 44-34, one of baseball's best records, and it's their best start after 78 games since 2008.

But where do both teams go from here?

San Francisco has been slowed by injuries, and its stable of pitching stars has been sporadic. The good news for the Giants is they're still very much in the National League West race and there's plenty of time to turn the season around.

The A's don't need magic mirrors to win the A.L. West as they did a year ago. With continued hitting and pitching, Oakland only needs to be consistent to make a postseason bid.

Who would have thought, midway through the season, the A's would have a better chance to win the World Series than the Giants?
